Gambito #571

This tournament shot my rating up over 1800 USCF! Of the 4 games, 3 were remarkably unimpressive, but I am pretty happy with this game which is my new best win rating-wise.

Raoul Crisologo Open - Round 5

Tough matchup for the last round, and I didn't play it well.

Raoul Crisologo Open - Round 4

This is my best win rating-wise so far, and overall I'm pretty proud of how I played. I really am making progress, I think! :)

Raoul Crisologo Open - Round 1

This was the first round of a new tournament. I was extremely close to not making time control (Hit what we think was move 40 with 1 second on my clock), and missed some drawing chances which may or may not have been due to the time pressure. I'm not too unhappy with the game overall, though, despite the loss.

Tom Fries Open - Round 4

This was a disappointing one for me. I do this sort of thing a lot. I have a hard time winning from a lead. If I get ahead, I somehow start to panic and try to "defend my lead" instead of keeping the pressure on. I went all passive and couldn't do anything with my lead here. If I'm fighting from even or a little behind I'm more likely to stay aggressive. I need to figure out how to keep myself fighting hard and attacking even if I'm ahead!

Tom Fries Open - Round 3

I got very lucky to get a draw out of this. The game felt like a mess the whole time, and it was sooooo long. Didn't finish until after midnight.

Tom Fries Open - Round 1

Got to try out my (aka GM Dzindzi's) French system for the second time. Not positive if I'll stick with it, but I'm going to keep experimenting with it for now. So far 2 draws in tournament games with it.

SDDC Senior/Junior Open

Day 1

Matchups were rough for round 1, with my opponent rated (exactly) 500 points above me, but I had an awesome chance that I blew! If I had just applied the "Dembo Rule" (from her book "The Very Unusual Book About Chess" which I quite like) about the "point of intersection" on move 14, I might have found 14. Rxf5, leading to a pretty crushing attack.

Round 2, on the other hand, I am a little embarrassed of.

Took a Round 3 bye. Rounds 4 & 5 tomorrow after some rest!

Gambito #558

Decided to get my chess in since I missed my Wednesday night game while on vacation. Had an interesting day. Definitely not my best playing. I only feel good about how I played in Round 1. Round 2 I got very lucky on. Round 3 I am quite disappointed in myself about (most disappointing loss I've had to date, I think). Round 4 I was tired and felt like I was flailing around.

Round 1 was my first tournament try at Panov-Botvinnik:

Round 2:
Updated to add: The game continued for at least 5 more moves from the end here that I didn't get notated due to time trouble. The position was more definitive at the actual end when Fred resigned.

Round 3. I can't believe I managed to lose this one.

Round 4:

Reserve Championship - Round 5

Both lucky and not on this one. I made a very unsound attack based on a prepped system I studied this past week. We went way off the studied line, and I tried to make it happen anyway. I got lucky to get out of the attack up when I could have been losing a lot. Then I got lucky again when there was a pawn push opportunity that my opponent missed. Then I froze up in the end game as usual and offered a draw when I was still winning because I couldn't figure out how to proceed and was scared of just ending up losing because I'm so bad in the endgame.

2012 Reserve Championship - Round 4

Got to try out my new project, the Tarrasch opening. Started well, and then I missed a simple tactic that dropped my queen. Boo.

2012 Reserve Championship - Round 3

This game was messy from both sides. I think we may both have been a little thrown off our game by not being used to playing a tournament game against a friend. :) I got lucky getting the win despite the messy play!

Super Gambito

I decided to play another Gambito this weekend! Probably not going to play more for a bit. A few weeks ago I had an embarrassing loss, and I got a chance to redeem myself round 1 today.

Round 2 was rough:

Disappointing. I sometimes just go stupid.

Recession Buster Open 2012

Last Round was an interesting game I got completely wrecked by a very small child in Round 3.

First Gambito in a while

Decided to go to my first Gambito in a while today. I definitely was feeling the shorter time control, and was not entirely on my game. Game two was a blunderfest, and I'm not even going to post that one. I enjoyed the first round game. There was time trouble at the end, so the last few moves here might not be 100% correct, but I think I at least portrayed the gist of my blunder. The game continued for a while, with both of us in major time trouble, and I apparently had one more chance, but missed it, and ran out of time.

Round 3 I got to play my most frequent USCF opponent, Anthony Harbone, who I got to prep briefly for during lunch.
