Murra Family Team Tourney - Round 6

Murra Family Team Tourney - Round 3

Brutal game. We were the last board playing, and didn't finish up until almost 11:30p. I felt pretty pushed around the whole game and was in time trouble at the end, so I'm very relieved to have come away with a draw, which I'm not sure he really should have given me at the end especially considering the time situation. I missed a pretty obvious tactic in the last few moves, although I'm not too sad about that since I was exhausted and struggling to not use up too much time. I spent almost half an hour at move 23, convinced that there was a beautiful tactic there if I could just find it. I didn't find it, and probably would have been better off with the time. I haven't put it in the computer yet, but am anxious to see if my gut was right there (or possibly the move before)

Murra Family Team Tourney - Round 2

My opponent lost this one rather than my winning it. I felt good with how I was doing until suddenly at move 33, realized I was lost. I crossed my fingers, pushed a pawn, and hoped he'd take the tempting looking blunder of 34 ... Re3+ rather than just moving his queen out of the way. Lucky for me he did.

Bill Murray Swiss Round 4; Perfect 4. Losses.

Sacked a piece for no gain. I hope I play better this weekend.

Thursday, July 28, 2011

Bill Murray Swiss Round 3; 0-3 so far

This is not my tournament. I made such a depressing blunder at the end.

Today's Gambito

Made it out for a Saturday tournament. First game was the first time I felt pretty good coming out of the opening against the French.

Second round I got soundly trounced.

Might have done better in round 3 with some additional endgame study.

The last round I played a completely unsound game like a maniac, but it was fun and I got a win.

Quick loss - Round 2

I blew a good chance on this game. Very disappointing.

Leonard Sussman Open - Round 6

Couldn't go to bed until I took a look at it. I didn't put much of the analysis in, but I definitely missed some chances.

Pacific Southwest Open

I'm in Los Angeles for the Pacific Southwest open. Signed up for the 2 day schedule, and took a first round bye so I didn't have to wake up too early. Got a win in my first game, Round 2.

Round 3 was a loss. This one was especially disappointing because my opponent had the game wrapped up, but then blundered to let me back in, but I failed to take advantage. I get too stupid in time trouble.

Round 4

Round 5. Went dumb early, and tried to fight my way back, but couldn't manage.

Withdrew before the last round to head home.

Amateur Open

Took a bit of a road trip to check out ChessPalace in Garden Grove and play in their Amateur Open that they do once a month. Only played the first 3 rounds so I could get back home at a reasonable hour. It was a good experience even if I didn't have great results.

Round 1

Rounds 2 was my only win

Round 3

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Leonard Sussman Open - Round 4

Wednesday night's game.

First attempt at entry was a newbie ChessBase user fail. Put the whole game in, and then somehow managed to save it without its moves. Don't even know how I managed. Had to input the whole thing again.

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

Leonard Sussman Open - Round 3

Felt harried the whole game, missed a big tactic against me, and feel I just got lucky to find a winning move near the end.

National Open - Las Vegas

This was my first big, national tournament. Drove to Las Vegas with my husband for the event, and enjoyed a long weekend in the hot desert!

Round 1

Round 2
My first run in with the French Defense. I didn't play well out of the opening, but got lucky to pull a draw out of the game.

Round 3
Thought this one was lost, but managed to push him around at the end and get a win!

Took a bye round 4

Round 5
Had another run-in with the French and didn't do well again.

Round 6

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Leonard Sussman Open - Round 2

Lost this one. Might have a new rival. ;) I wish I had realized that there might be drawing chances with 2 rooks versus queen. One of those endgames things I haven't really learned yet, but maybe next time I'll do better with it. I might have fought harder at the end!

Gambito

Didn't play very well today. 1 win and 2 losses.

Here's one of the losses. The game went on for a little while longer with me in serious time trouble, which I never deal with well anyway.

Last round of the tourney

I prepped special for my opponent, knowing he would be playing the London system. (He did scare me by playing an alternate move order, but luckily for me it came back to what I prepped!) I felt really good about my position out of the opening. Then I couldn't hold on, and offered a draw in a fit of discouragement. I know I should have played it out since I really need endgame practice, but was afraid to try and fail, I have to admit!

Gambito

Played in another Gambito yesterday. Overall I'd say I had a decent day. I didn't feel like I was playing my best (probably because I'm more comfortable with a longer time control), but I'm happy with my results.

First game was my only loss of the day.

Round 2

Round 3:

Coming soon

Round 4. Fun one with Chuck!

Tonight's win

I am really proud of this game!

Draw for round 4 of Wednesday night tourney

I am really happy with this game. I came into it really tired and grumpy, so wasn't expecting much, but I managed to do ok and get a draw despite that. I just ran it through the computer analysis, and I think this is the cleanest game according to the engine analysis that I've ever had!

Sunday, May 8, 2011

Super Gambito

Played in my first Gambito in a few weeks. Took a bye the first round, and played 3 games.

Here's the first one. Even on a quick win, the computer analysis always makes me feel a bit dumb. :)

Second game. My one loss. It was a fun one, though!

Third game.

Gary Tuttle Round 3 - Slow Section

Gary Tuttle Tourney - Slow Section - Round 2

Second round of the new tournament. I decided to play aggressively. It was a fun game.

Thursday, April 21, 2011

New tourney, Round 1

Messed this one up! :) Fun game, though.

Update: I had a mistake in recording the game that made it look like we were both strangely ignoring a hanging knight near the end. Fixed here:

Game with notation mistake:

Club Champion Simultaneous Exhibition

I was one of 26 opponents again the 2011 SDCC club champion, Raoul. It's always a little discouraging looking at the computer analysis, but I'm mostly happy with how I played. :)

House Game before the next tourney

Since the women's tournament ended a week early, I got a house game tonight, and it was a crazy one! I was pretty much lost over and over, but got a draw... he really shouldn't have given me a draw even where we ended, but I'm not complaining. I really enjoyed the game, though; very exciting. :)

Thursday, March 31, 2011

Women's Championship - Round 6

This turned out to be the last round of the Women's Championship tournament, and I managed to go undefeated 6-0. I felt like I was taking a really long time to finish this one after my opponent blundered a rook. I think I need a lot more endgame training.

Thursday, March 24, 2011

Women's Championship - Round 5

I was nervous about this game when I found out the matchups had changed and I'd be up again Maria Elena. I felt like I played well, though, and managed a win! Many thanks to Irina for playing this opening all the time, leading me to be pretty well prepped. :) I'm pretty sure I could have done better than that queen exchange, but I feel good when I at least hold my own out of the opening since I'm still pretty new and have a very small opening repertoire. Now 5 - 0 in the tournament with 2 rounds to go.

I just realized that if I take a 6th round bye, than no one can catch me, but if I play and lose both of the last 2, than there is one other person who has a chance at winning...

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Women's Championship - Round 4

I'm now 4-0 in the Women's tourney. I feel really good about how I played in the early part of this game, but it got really sloppy as it went on. I'm lucky I came out with a win.

Western Class Championships

I played in Class C in my first big tournament this weekend, the Western Class Championships. Started out slow with two losses, but finished well. 2-2-1.

This was my tough start to the tourney.

Re-entered the tournament on the 2-day schedule, first 2 rounds G/75, and lost my second attempt at "Round 1". Stopped notating because of time pressure, but blundered my rook to a King - Rook knight fork at the end, in a very sad manner. Irina was watching right before that, decided I had the game in hand, and took a bathroom break, and came back to the sad, sad truth. :). This was against the guy who ended up winning Class C. His post-tourney rating was 1705. He was playing with almost no time on his clock from about move 40, but I still couldn't finish it!

Round 2 after re-entry. I was feeling discouraged by my first 2 games, so offered a draw relatively early in the game, and she accepted. Stockfish analysis agrees that it was pretty even at that point. I'm ok with that decision. I took a bye in the third round, which gave me a chance to relax after a not-bad result. :)

Round 4. I think he was trying out a new opening that he wasn't comfortable with, and then started second guessing it. I unfortunately did let him even it back up in the middlegame, but then got lucky that he made a big mistake.

This was the last game of the tourney. I felt like I was losing the whole time, and suddenly there was a mate. I hear this is the brother of IM Jacek Stopa. :)

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

Women's Championship - Round 3

Third game of SDCC's Women's Championship. I won first board. :)

Saturday, March 5, 2011

March Super Gambito

I had a good day today in the 4 round Gambito! Games were G/40.

First round again first seed in Reserve section:

Second round was my only loss. I just completely missed 31. ... Bxh2 opened up 32. d6+. My opponent kept an impressively clear head with 5 second left on his clock for at least the last 5 moves of the game, and my clock ran down instead.

Other 2 games to follow.

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Women's Championship - Round 2

Got to play the lovely Irina tonight. She shocked me by letting me play my Göring gambit instead of playing her Petrov's defense. Analysis from Stockfish engine.

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Women's Championships - Round 1

I had a good start for the first round.

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Markowski Open, Round 7

This one spiraled away from me. Tried to be aggressive, but was running late, didn't eat dinner, and didn't have my brain together enough to pull it off.

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Markowski Open, Round 6

I was disappointed with this one.

Sunday, February 6, 2011

February 5th Special Five Round Super Gambito

Yesterday was a long day with a 5 round tournament, time control G/40. First round was a disaster (aka Staunton gambit fail). I'm hesitant to post it because it was so sad, but maybe someone will get a laugh from it, so here it is:

Will add more of the games later.

Update:

Here's my Round 3 loss. This is my third time playing Anthony Harbone, and my third time losing to him. I will get him some day!

Thursday, February 3, 2011

Markowski Open, Round 5

I was definitely feeling over-matched the whole game. I never managed to get anything going.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Markowski Open, Round 4

I'm pretty happy with this one!

Thursday, January 20, 2011

Markowski Open Round 3

I had been originally scheduled to play some rated well above me, but the pairing changed at the last moment, not unexpectedly.

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Tough opponent last night

No surprise that I lost this one with how much higher rated he was than me, but I think I at least played better than he expected and made him a bit nervous. :) I got sloppy at the end. He came really close to losing on time, but with the 40th move he got 60 more minutes to finish me off with, so I resigned. :)
