Last Round Loss

Couldn't pull out a win or draw to get my rating over 1500. Ah, well. It was an exhausting game, and I think at some point I kind of gave up on it since I was down material and my brain was getting too tired to keep thinking so hard.

Wednesday night's win

I'm kinda proud of the tactic I set up near the end. He could have gotten out of it, but I think it still would have worked out well for me if he had seen it.

Last night's game

I played only the second other woman I've ever played in chess last night. :) I thought it was a good game. The opening went a little strangely, because I was studying Scotch Game - Göring Gambit in anticipation of playing white, and when we went into a Sicilian instead that looked similar, I thought I'd try something related. In hindsight, I realize that probably doesn't work out as well with black's e pawn still there to push to protect the f pawn if she had accepted it.

Thursday night win

Tonight was the last game of the current Escondido tournament. I'm not going to be playing in Thursday night games anymore, at least for a while, having decided to start up Wednesday night games at the San Diego Chess Club instead. I got to end with a win. :)

Wednesday night: First crack at the Dutch

I decided I wanted to try out the Dutch, since at the level I play right now, my opponents are likely to not have faced it much, and I'm not very comfortable in openings against d4 yet. My opponent obliged me by opening 1. d4. I lost the game, but it was a really fun one!

Tonight's win!

I got a win tonight, and I'm pretty psyched about it. :)

Thursday night game

I had another loss. Time control was G/120. I think I didn't play badly, though, until I went stupid at move 24! I was getting impatient with the game as my opponent was playing extremely slowly, which clearly I need to get used to! At the end of the game I had something like 80 or 90 minutes left on my clock, and my opponent had 3 minutes. He certainly earned the win. :)

Class Championships, Round 1

This was my first Wednesday night game at the San Diego Chess club, and it was a loss. Time control was 40/90 minutes, SD/60 minutes.

Saturday Gambito - Four Round Tourney

I played in the San Diego Chess Club's Gambito tournament on Saturday. It's a four round tourney they run almost every Saturday with a time control of G/40, which a little quicker than I prefer (my Thursday night games are G/120), but I'm starting to get used to it.

The first game was tough. I was feeling lost right from the beginning, because I'm not yet comfortable with how to respond to 1. d4 as black. Definitely need some study time on that!

I felt much more confident in the second game, despite him opening with the completely unfamiliar 1. f4.

I felt like I was close to a win in my third game, and then lost it. The computer didn't think I was as close as I did though!

The fourth game was quite quick. My opponent wasn't having a good day.

Thursday Night's Mess

Although I got a win, I'm kind of embarrassed by how poorly I played in this one! Here it is anyway.

Another loss

It was a fun game, though. I thought I had him, but clearly I was wrong. :) I'm thinking I want to branch out from the Caro-Kann, though. I'm starting to think it isn't the opening for me.

Tough game Thursday

I got to play one of the 2 top players that play at the Escondido Chess Club. As expected, I lost, but I felt like I did decently, all things considered. :) I didn't see that at the end after 30. Qf2 Be3 I still had a threat with 31. Rd1 or I would have played it out a little farther.

Weird game last week

So this game actually got logged as a draw because on move 51 my opponent put his rook in a spot that would have dropped it, but asked if he could take it back since he hadn't hit his clock yet, and I let him. We both found out afterward that the rules say once you let go, it's final, so he said that I won, but I felt weird about it so I marked it draw :)

National Chess Day Gambito

I played in a four round tourney yesterday. I won 2 and lost 2, but overall felt better than the last time I tried the 4 rounder. Update: I just found that I won the best game prize in the "Reserve section" for one of my wins!

Below is one of my losses. My opponent was a 9 year old, who apparently has been playing in USCF rated games since he was 5.

Update: Here is my other loss, the last game of the day.

And here is the game that won me the $15 best game prize! :)

Another Thursday night game

Got a win, and am happy with how I played. Just ran the computer analysis.

Another loss

I haven't had the computer analyze this one yet, but it has some good evidence that I need more endgame study! My opponent and I each made several mistakes throughout: him letting me out of a disaster by accepting a queen trade, and then my not too long afterwards "trading" my knight for a pawn, but it came down to a Philidor position at the end which should be a draw but that I screwed up.

UPDATE: Game updated with computer analysis (which is a little depressing!)

This evening's draw

Bit of a long, crazy game

There were lots of mistakes on both sides, but I'm pretty excited that after the major blunder of dropping my queen for no reason, I (mostly) pulled my head back together and didn't completely fall apart.

Another loss.

I blundered and then fell apart.

This was my third game

My second rated game

I'm embarrassed that I won this game. I was completely beaten, and my opponent simply started flaking out.
